No Road Trip Like My Family Reunion

My old car

What happens when me, my Mom and my Brother head to Arkansas for the family reunion…

I love to travel, heck I’ll hop on anything smoking that will get me out of town. My brother too. My mother, not so much. The only family vacation we can get her to take is a road trip so every two years we drive to Stuttgart, Arkansas for the family reunion. On one particular trip, I had just bought a Ford Mustang convertible so I thought I was pretty special. My Mom and I tied on scarves like they do in the old movies and then put on sunglasses, my brother grabbed his shades and jumped in the back seat (not because he was in the spirit, it was his way of keeping a low-profile).  I put the top down and off we went…for about ten blocks…then I had to pull over and put the top up (our family reunion is in July and it was hotter than fish grease!)Anyway, the rest of the trip was great! My mom and I sang and talked the whole way, my brother listened to his Walkman and ignored us. (Yes, Walkman this was years ago, pre-iPod) .

The trip back was a different story. Everything was going smooth until I got a flat. I forgot I took the spare out a few days prior to bring something home and I forgot to put it back in the trunk. We were in a teeny town in the middle of  nowhere. I called AAA and as we were waiting, nature called and the only way I could answer was to walk across a field and behind a tree. Well, I used to have a prissy reputation in my family so believe me they were shocked that I would actually do this. When I got back to the car, my brother was pointing and laughing so hard, tears were streaming down his face! I wanted to punch him except we weren’t kids anymore. I looked to my Mom for sympathy- no such luck. She was chuckling too. After a moment, I laughed too. The wrecker finally came and took us to the shop in the business district so we could get the flat fixed then we were back on our way.  That car is long gone, but the memory of this trip lives on…and so does my brother’s laughter.
