Colton Dixon won the hearts of many during Season 11 of American Idol. Having auditioned for Idol the previous season with his sister Schyler, when she decided to try out again Colton accompanied just to support.

After the judges convinced him to audition both he and his sister were awarded golden tickets and Colton went on to make it to the Top 10. Busy at work putting the final touches on his debut album Colton Dixon – a Messenger, Colton sat down with CBS Local and filled us in on the story behind his new single “You Are” and what we can expect from his album.

“I started writing the song ‘You Are’ about a year ago at a friend of mine’s apartment. He had a guitar idea and we just ran with it,” he said. “To me the song is a worship song. It’s about God is everything that we’re not. I think that’s just a beautiful phrase. Whenever we fall or whenever we’re in a rough spot we know God’s going to be there to pick us up.”

Colton explained that “You Are” is a catchy song fans will get stuck in their heads.

“When we were selecting songs for the record we came across this song and it just gets implanted into your brain,” he said. “The chorus is really, really simple but it’s got a great hook. I found myself singing it all day long. I just couldn’t stop. Everyone I’ve played it for they’ve said the same thing, it gets stuck in your head. That had that going for it.”

Excited the song will be on pop radio, Colton said it’s a continuation of what he did on American Idol, bringing the Christian market into that realm.

Earlier this week Colton announced the title of his album and that it will be available the end of January 2013.

“The album musically is going to be kind of like Coldplay, 30 Seconds to Mars and Switchfoot had a baby. It’s going to be a lot of fun,” he said. “There’s going to be rock moments, there’s going to be tender moments. There’s going to be moments that make you want to get up and dance and go crazy. Lyrically it stays pretty consistent throughout the whole thing.”

“I just want to encourage others in every way possible,” he said. “We all go through hard times and we all find ourselves in the valley so I just want to share what I’ve been through and maybe that can help somebody else.”
