Wednesday marks the birthday of artist Edvard Munch; his name may not evoke familiarity, but his famous painting should!

Munch, a Norwegian painter and known for his ability to capture from the anxiety from humans all in a single a scream, would have turned 149 years old Wednesday.

Munch created four distinct versions of his art piece titled “The Scream”. Two of the paintings were done in pastels and the other ones were crafted in paints.

Using inspiration from a poignant sunset he saw in Ekeberg, Oslo, Munch is believed to have looked out across the water, standing near Ekeberg’s slaughterhouse and primary asylum.

Regardless of the frame of mind Munch was in as he captured anxiety on canvas, “The Scream” fetched almost $120 million at Christie’s this year, thus making it the most expensive work of art to ever sell at auction.
