Ed Sheeran on Texas, Being Named Worst-Dressed Man, and His Childhood Nickname
“I think this is the first time I’m gonna hear it on radio in America!”
Ed Sheeran checked in with me before taking the stage at the Bayou Music Center in Houston Thursday night, and we premiered his new single Lego House.
“[It's about] my ex, EX girlfriend,” he says. “I think the song has connected with a few people around the world so far.”
Sheeran has connected with a LOT of people (mostly young women) but found himself at the top of a not-so-flattering list at the end of 2012: GQ’s WORST-Dressed Man.
“Number two was a politician and number three was a cross-dressing cage fighter. So I’m not in a good place right now, ya know?” he jokes. “You wear clothes to pick up hot girls, and you can spend more time to pick up hot girls or you can learn to play the guitar.” (Which is working JUST fine for him!) He giggles and admits: “I think so.”
He’s also picked up his first Grammy recognition, with his hit A Team nominated for Song of the Year. Shortly after the biggest night in music, he’ll hit the road with Taylor Swift, and keep working on a second album.
“I’m gonna keep writing… Thankfully this album is kinda continually being successful so I don’t have [a set date for the new one] yet.”
Before the call, a Mix 96.5 listener tweeted us a question I posed to Ed: “What’s the difference between England and Texas?”
“Well, [Texas is] about twenty times the size of it… it’s absolutely huge. And it’s different here. I got in the hotel lift yesterday and there was this woman there, she’s like ‘hey, how y’all doin?'” he says. “In England we’re taught not to talk to strangers… we’re a kinda shy and rude society, whereas Texas is really friendly and outgoing.”
