Don’t touch that dial…unless you are sure you are dialing the correct area code with that phone number.

Houston is getting a new area code, thanks to continued growth that the city is seeing.

The 346 area code will be added to the existing 713, 281 and 832 area codes that are active in Harris, Fort Bend, Montgomery, Brazoria, Galveston, Waller, Austin, Montgomery, Chambers San Jacinto and Liberty counties.

The North American Number Planning Administrator assigned the 346 area code to Houston after projecting the existing Houston/Harris County-based area codes will run out of numbers by the end of September in 2014.

The new area code will not require any reprogramming changes to existing equipment and will not be assigned until July 1, 2014.

How in the world are area codes designed? Take a look at the history of one area code below!
