Mahoney’s BBQ Reviews: Central Texas Style BBQ

Central Texas Style BBQ has been a Pearland staple since 1969. It’s family owned & operated and located in the heart of Pearland right off of 518 just west of 35.

Central Texas Style BBQ

I arrived at Central Style Texas BBQ at 12:35p on a Wednesday afternoon. There was a small lunch line that was moving quickly.  They have a very large dining area that was about half full and there was plenty of places to sit which is a big plus in my book. Not having to fight to get food or find a place to sit makes me want to come back immediately.

Checking out the menu they offered your standard BBQ fair for the most part: Pulled pork, chicken, pork ribs, spicy sausage and ham. I ordered the rare four meat plate which was very reasonably priced and had good sized portions as you can see bellow.

Chicken:

I traditionally don’t order chicken at most BBQ places but Central’s chicken looked really appealing so I gave it a shot. The chicken on the bone was a tad bit dry but still seasoned well and tasty. The sliced chicken was a little more moist but not as flavorful. Overall it was good but not great.

Pork Ribs:

Personally I thought this was the best item I had on my 4 meat plate. They were moist, flavorful and the meat slid off the bone. Couldn’t ask more from a rib. These guys give Killen’s BBQ (which is right down the street) a run for their money when it comes to pork ribs.

Grade: A

Jalapeno Sausage:

Great casing, solid consistency and good flavor but not quite as spicy as I would prefer. Overall it’s a very good piece of sausage just not quite perfect.

Ham:

Central Style Texas BBQ is one of the rare BBQ joints that offer smoked ham so I figured why not and gave it a shot. It was moist, tender and had a good flavor. I was pleasantly surprised by how good it was. Would order again for sure.

Loaded Mashed Potatoes:

Cheese, onions & potatoes. Simple and delicious. My one complaint would be that it would have been better hot rather than just warm

Mac & Cheese:

Gooey, cheesy and the shells were nice and soft. Could have used a dash of salt and some pepper but overall it was very good.

Peach Cobbler:

I somehow saved room after the 4 meat plate for desert. This peach cobbler was amazing. Hands down one of my new favorite deserts. The crust was well done and crunchy and paired perfectly with the sweet gooey peach mix. Really happy that I saved room for this.

Final Thoughts:

I was a big fan of Central Texas Style BBQ. Their meats and sides were solid. The staff was friendly. The wait was next to nothing, there was ample seating and it was priced to move especially at lunch. There is a reason they have been open since 1969; It’s really good food without any hassle.

Killen’s BBQ down the street is one of the best BBQ places in the country but the wait that comes along with their establishment makes it less accessible and when I want BBQ and don’t want to wait in a line Central Texas Style BBQ is my new go to in Pearland.
