Katy Perry appeared as a surprise guest on The Ellen DeGeneres Show to meet a survivor of the worst mass shooting in U.S. history.
Tony Marrero is a survivor of the Pulse Nightclub shooting in Orlando. Marrero was invited to The Ellen Show to share his survival story. He was shot 4 times in the back and actually died on the way to the hospital.
On Thursday’s episode, Tony tells Ellen his friend Luis invited him to Pulse the night of the shooting but unfortunately didn’t make it out.
“He called me and said, ‘Hey can you do me a favor, I’m going to this club, it’s a gay club, I’m not gay, can you come with me?’I said sure, I’ll protect you.”
It was right around the time the DJ said it was the last call when Tony and Luis began making their way out of the club. Marrero says that’s when they heard gunshots and hit the ground. The two ended up on different ends of the club and that was the last time they saw each other.
He also revealed that during his time in the hospital, his turned to “Rise” by Katy Perry. So Ellen, of course, surprised Tony with Katy Perry! The two were overcome with emotion and tears. They were both shaking and thanking each other for inspiring one another.
Katy Perry also told Marrero she heard he wants to go to film school so she will be paying for his first year at school! How awesome?
I literally have no words yet. Still processing. Episode airs tomorrow at 3p. Thank you so much @theellenshow for the love, support and for letting me share my story with you to help others. Together we will make this world a better place. This was a dream come true! ❤ #TonyStrong #LoveIsLove #WeAreOrlando #OrlandoUnited #OrlandoStrong #WeWillAllRise #KeepOnDancing #SharingMyStory
